Patent analytics: How we do it
Using a bespoke software tool a full and specific patent search is conducted and modified to collate all patents on the chosen subject - this is much the same as a patent attorney might do, and full details of the patents are provided along with the reporting. From this list of patents the major companies, universities and assignees can be discovered.
A broad initial search with key chosen terms and derivate spellings leads to a patent search space numbering up to several thousands of patents. A manual search through the patent titles eliminates those that are not relevant giving the total patent list for analysis. These are generally a mixture of granted and pending patent applications worldwide - including non English language patents (typically Asian languages).
Of the total patents analysed it is possible to download the full pdf description for the majority of patents and these are included on an usb drive provided.
This total patent base is then manually merged by assignee and where an assignee is not given (as is often the case for US patents before 16 months) they are merged on the basis of the inventor name, when an inventor is matched to an assignee from an earlier patent.
The titles of the total patent base are then manually searched to create a list of keywords for both technologies and applications. During the technology keyword creation it becomes apparent how key technologies can be best characterised.
The patents are then subsequently analysed by assignee, material technology, process technology and application depending on how a particular technology is characterised. The results for each of these are first presented individually and then combined as a co-occurrence analysis where pairings of assignee / material technology / process technology and application are analysed.
Reports contain a high level summary of the data obtained but to fully analyse the results all the raw data files and patent texts are also supplied on an USB drive containing 2-4 GB of data.
